Transparent and Accessible Energy Modelling

Transparent energy modelling, built on academic expertise and public infrastructure.

Open Insights bridges the gap between academic energy modelling and policy expertise through a transparent, open-source framework, providing energy stakeholders with access to credible, replicable, and actionable insights.

Our Core Commitments

Full Audit Trail

All code, assumptions, and data are publicly available for review at any time.

Transparent Governance

Clear methodologies and documented processes guide analyses.

Open Source

All models are released open-source and built for and by the research community, enabling other researchers to replicate our analyses.

One framework. Three partners. A fully traceable analytical chain.

Open Insights is a collaborative effort between SESIT at the University of Victoria, Energy Modelling Hub, and Macrocosm — each committed to building a more transparent and accessible Canadian modelling ecosystem. Open Insights makes these collaborative efforts visible, from academic model design to operational execution, and final assessment publication.

Model Developers

Academic Partners

Energy system models are developed and maintained by academic partners — including researchers at the University of Victoria (SESIT) and Simon Fraser University (EMRG). These teams design the core modelling architecture and advance the underlying methods.

Infrastructure

Energy Modelling Hub

The Energy Modelling Hub operates and maintains the modelling infrastructure, including the M3 Platform. It runs the models under the direction of scientific partners and handles day-to-day operational delivery.

The Framework

Open Insights

Open Insights is the shared framework under which academic model developers and operational infrastructure partners collaborate. OI defines the transparency standards, open-source commitments, and publication processes that govern every assessment and project, ranging from model design to published results.

Academic partners build open-source modelling tools EMH operates and hosts the infrastructure Open Insights publishes transparent assessments and documentation for the public.

Tools for analysts, journalists, and policy teams.

Energy Policy Monitor

Access EPM

Independent, timely, and credible assessment of major Canadian energy and climate policy announcements. Led by the Open Insights team with operational support from the Energy Modelling Hub, the EPM translates complex energy policy news into transparent analyses on emissions, energy systems, and socio-economic costs.
